It's a Colorado Wedding! How to Pass the Father of the Bride Test
Today, my daughter Mackenna is getting married, Saturday June 21, 2025. What an amazing day it is here in Vail Colorado.
As part of my Father of The Bride speech, I will be telling the story of how “I Knew” that Jack was the one. There are three stories to tell.
The First Story
In 2019 we moved my daughter out of her college house in Fort Collins Colorado (YAY… Go RAMS!) and into her new “city apartment” in Denver. The load up of the UHaul to make the move was easy enough. Out the door, up the truck ramp, drop carefully… repeat 50 more times. Arriving in uptown Denver at her new pad was a different story. Her apartment was on the third floor, and the truck was too tall to enter the parking garage of the building. After waiting a while for a street space to open up, we nudged the UHaul into a space. But we could not exactly leave it wide open while taking items up the stairwell.
After a successfully taking boxes and small items up by hand, we had the “big stuff” to get up there. Well, the temperature all day was well into the 90’s and it was sapping a lot of energy. Jack had an idea… "what if we load this sofa into the back of my 4-Runner and I’ll drive up into the parking structure". Brilliant! This dude can figure out solutions to challenges. The Second Story
That same day, Jack had a situation that he needed to take care of with his mom. He dropped everything to be with her. I was impressed by that. If a boy takes care of his mom, he’s going to take care of all the women in his life, my daughter especially. Check #2 Caring Nature - Passed
The Third Story
We were all back in Fort Collins in the Fall of 2019 for the CSU homecoming weekend. Because we had started looking for accommodations late, we ended up at an Airbnb in Windsor, east of Fort Collins and I-25. While it was a lovely house, it was also a long drive from the CSU campus. The game was fun, even though the Rams lost. Us old folks decided to head back to the house, while the recent college grads wanted to visit some of their old favorite bars. At some point, we figured they’d get an uber to the rental house. Long story getting longer… so let’s cut to the chase. It’s now 2AM, and my wife wakes me up to tell me she has tracked them to some house in Fort Collins. Followed by “you need to go get them”!
UGH! So, I hop into car though the darkness and wild environs of Colorado. Eventually I find the dark street with homes in the dark, and they hop into the car. My daughter starts to tell me about an incident at a bar where she was kicked out of the line… Just "minding her own business" but gets kicked out of line. NOW, something didn’t sound right, and after hearing the same story three times with slurred speech, dad got mad, and made it clear he wasn’t pleased. After some uncomfortable silence, from the back seat, Jack came to her defense with a rational backstory. In the moment, I wasn’t ready to hear it. But… he did come the defense to support his girl.
